Nintendo has revealed a new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ahead of its final trailer — and it confirms two more villains will show up

A new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (TSMGM) has been revealed by Nintendo, and it confirms that two additional Mario villains will appear in the highly anticipated sequel. 🎬🍄

Released on March 6, the artwork features many familiar characters, including Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Bowser, Rosalina, Bowser Jr., and Birdo.

However, if you look closely beneath Birdo and Yoshi, you can spot a crown-wearing frog. Longtime Nintendo fans will immediately recognize this character as Wart.

Who is Wart?

Wart is the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2. In that game, he attempts to conquer Subcon, also known as the Land of Dreams, alongside his gang called the 8 bits. Because the character hasn’t appeared often in modern Mario games, only older Nintendo fans may recognize him right away.

Another villain confirmed

Wart isn’t the only newly confirmed enemy in the film. Just above him on the poster is a sunglasses-wearing rodent — Mouser. In Super Mario Bros. 2, players must defeat Mouser three separate times throughout the game.

Since both Wart and Birdo originally appeared as villains in Super Mario Bros. 2, it was quite likely that Mouser would also show up in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Their possible roles in the movie

At the moment, it’s unclear how large a role Wart, Mouser, and Birdo will play, or which heroes they’ll face. One possible scenario is that they act as secondary villains, while Bowser and Bowser Jr. remain the primary antagonists. In that case:

  • Mario and Luigi might confront Bowser and his son.
  • Wart and his allies could face Princess Peach and Toad during a side adventure.

Trailer and release date

The final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will premiere during the next Nintendo Direct presentation on March 9.

The animated film — produced by Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination — is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 1.
