While VPN services are best known for encrypting internet traffic and hiding IP addresses, many providers are now broadening their focus to include wider cybersecurity protections. Surfshark’s latest update targets the very first step of browsing—the search engine—helping users avoid dangerous websites before they ever click a link.

The new feature scans links shown in Google Search results in real time. If a website is associated with malware, phishing activity, or known data breaches, the Surfshark extension displays a warning icon next to the result. This gives users a clear visual cue to stay away from risky sites without having to open them first.

Gabriele Sinkeviciute, Surfshark’s Head of Product, says this kind of proactive protection is increasingly necessary as online threats continue to evolve.

“It’s hard to imagine a day without using a search engine like Google, but even innocent searches can expose users to hidden risks,” Sinkeviciute explained. The goal, she said, is to help people browse more safely “without any extra effort.”

A visual layer of protection

The key advantage of this update is early visibility. Traditional safety tools often alert users only after they’ve landed on a suspicious website, or require them to manually check a site’s reputation. By embedding warnings directly into Google Search, Surfshark aims to stop threats before they have a chance to cause harm.

According to the company, the need for such protection is growing rapidly. Surfshark says it detected more than 141,000 new online threats in 2025 alone. Since 2022, it has also added over 25,000 websites to its database that are considered potentially dangerous but are not easily recognizable as such.

“Protecting users from malicious links in search results is just as important as securing their data online,” Sinkeviciute added. “We want to help people avoid account takeovers, malware infections, and stolen credentials that can happen when you unknowingly visit a harmful site.”

This update reflects a broader industry shift, with VPN providers increasingly positioning themselves as full security platforms. Services like NordVPN with Threat Protection and ExpressVPN with Threat Manager have made similar moves to block trackers, malicious domains, and unsafe websites.

How to enable Surfshark’s website safety warnings

At launch, the feature is available only for Google Search via the Surfshark browser extension on Google Chrome. Existing users should ensure their extension is updated to the latest version.

Once updated, head to the Website safety warnings section and enable both the Data breach alert and Malware alert toggles.

For users interested in expanding their online protection further, Surfshark also offers additional tools such as antivirus protection and data leak monitoring. The browser extension now supports dedicated IP addresses as well, making it a stronger option for secure and uninterrupted browsing.
