If you want to better protect your privacy while using one of the best iPhones, limiting how your location data is shared is one of the most effective steps you can take. With iOS 26.3 set to arrive soon, Apple is adding another tool to help keep your personal information more secure.
The update introduces a new feature called Limit Precise Location, which is designed to reduce how much detail can be inferred from your location data. Instead of allowing cellular carriers to access highly accurate positioning information, the feature provides them with much broader, less specific location details.
According to a new support document published by Apple, your location can normally be estimated based on the cell towers your device connects to. With Limit Precise Location enabled, Apple restricts the data carriers can access, meaning they may only be able to identify your general area—such as your neighborhood—rather than an exact address.
Apple emphasizes that enabling this setting does not impact signal strength or overall user experience. It also won’t interfere with emergency services, as first responders will still be able to view your precise location when necessary.
To turn on the feature, head to the Settings app, tap Mobile Service > Mobile Data Options, and enable Limit Precise Location. You’ll need to restart your device each time you switch the feature on or off.
Device and network compatibility
There are a few requirements to keep in mind. Apple says the feature is only supported on specific devices, including the iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, and the iPad Pro with an M5 chip and cellular connectivity.
Your device must also be connected to a supported carrier. At launch, compatibility is limited to the following networks:
- Germany: Telekom
- United Kingdom: EE, BT
- United States: Boost Mobile
- Thailand: AIS, True
In addition, your device must be running iOS 26.3 or iPadOS 26.3. While these updates haven’t been released yet, Apple is expected to roll them out within the next week.
It’s also important to note that Limit Precise Location only affects what data cellular carriers can access. It doesn’t change how apps use your location, which must still be managed separately via Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
For now, these requirements mean the feature is rolling out in a fairly limited way. However, as more Apple devices adopt the company’s newer C1 and C1X modems, privacy-focused features like this are likely to become standard. That’s good news for users who want tighter control over their location data and stronger privacy overall.
