Microsoft is facing problems with its first Windows 11 update of 2026. Many users have reported different errors after installing the update KB5074109, which was released on Patch Tuesday in January 2026.

According to these reports, some Windows 11 computers are showing black screen errors. The classic Outlook app is crashing for some users, and File Explorer is not following the settings saved in the desktop.ini file.
In addition, some PCs cannot shut down properly, and sleep mode does not work on certain devices. There are also reports that third-party apps, such as Citrix Director, no longer work after the update.
Microsoft has already fixed or confirmed some of these issues. The shutdown problem and Remote Desktop connection issues have been solved. However, the crash problem with the classic Outlook app has not been fixed yet.
The KB5074109 update is a mandatory security update, so it is installed automatically on all Windows 11 PCs. When Windows Latest asked Microsoft for a comment, the company said it has no further information to share at this time.
Windows Latest also noted that Microsoft has marked some newly reported problems as “looking into it” in the Feedback Hub. One example is the File Explorer and desktop.ini issue. Microsoft may release fixes for these problems in the next Patch Tuesday update on February 10, 2026.
