Perplexity AI has introduced a new concept it calls the “Personal Computer,” an AI-powered system designed to act as a deeply integrated personal assistant within the macOS environment. The idea is to transform a traditional computer into an AI-driven agent that can understand goals, perform tasks, and operate autonomously on behalf of the user.

A new vision of the “Personal Computer”
According to Perplexity, the system runs on a dedicated Mac mini, which can remain active 24/7. The device connects to local applications while also interacting with Perplexity’s secure cloud services.
The company describes this setup as turning AI itself into the computer. Instead of simply responding to commands, the system can understand tasks, use software tools, and complete work automatically.
The platform combines several advanced technologies, including:
- 20 frontier AI models
- AI-powered search
- Agent-based internet access capable of performing tasks online
Your Mac mini as a personal AI assistant
Perplexity’s Personal Computer essentially acts as a digital proxy for the user. Once configured, it can be accessed and controlled remotely from almost any device.
The company says this allows the system to:
- handle research tasks
- automate workflows
- manage information
- interact with applications on the user’s behalf
To address safety concerns, Perplexity built in multiple protections, including:
- A kill switch for instantly shutting down the system
- Audit trails that track AI activity
- Secure connections between local software and cloud services
Competing with other AI assistant setups
The launch comes as interest grows in similar AI-powered assistant systems. For example, many users are experimenting with OpenClaw, which can also be installed on devices like the Mac mini to create an always-on digital assistant.
Perplexity aims to go further by offering a fully integrated platform combining AI models, automation tools, and enterprise integrations.
Enterprise integrations and AI-first browsing
For business users, the system can connect with major enterprise platforms such as:
- Snowflake
- Salesforce
- HubSpot
Perplexity is also offering Comet, an AI-focused web browser designed for enterprise customers. Since much of modern work happens online, the company believes AI-powered browsing will play a central role in productivity.
Real-world productivity claims
Perplexity claims the system has already delivered impressive internal results. According to the company, using its AI-powered Personal Computer allowed it to:
- Save about $1.6 million in labor costs
- Complete the equivalent of 3.25 years of work in just four weeks
While such claims still require independent verification, they highlight the potential productivity benefits of AI-driven automation.
Tools for developers and improved data sources
To encourage further development, Perplexity is releasing four key APIs used by the system:
Search API
Agent API
Embeddings API
Sandbox API
The company is also expanding its data partnerships to improve the accuracy of information used by the AI system. New Premium Sources include:
- Statista
- CB Insights
- PitchBook
